We have had a busy two months since my last report. We have held four board competitions;
The Willsteed Cup, the A. A. Butt Memorial Trophy, The Hayco Cup and Club Championship
along with two further medal competitions, well played to all the winners. The Club
Championship which this year again incorporated the Whirlwind and O’Donohue trophies was
probably not as well attended as we had hoped but congratulations to Matt Barnicoat for
winning the scratch, and Lee Dixon for winning the handicap shield.
We have been well represented in both the IW Alliance and Union events. In the IWGU 13
members took part in the Glynn Jones trophy at Osborne and 11 Ryde players played in the
Summer Meeting at Newport. In the IWGA 23 members took part in the Jefferson trophy here at
Ryde, six Ryde players (three pairs) played in the Mabey Cup competition at Osborne, and
another 11 took part in the Alliance Championship where Rob Hull won the 36 Hole scratch and
Nigel Claxton on the 18 hole handicap competition.
The County Sevens team won their first-round match away at Cowes but unfortunately lost in
the second-round away at Newport. There was mixed success in the Annodata National Golf
Club 5’s with one team losing away at Bramshott Hill and the other beating Highcliffe Castle at
home in the first round. They have followed this up with wins at Cams Hall Estate and Ferndown
putting them in the last 64. Both of our over 50’s IW Knockout teams have reached this year’s
final so guaranteeing Ryde a winner. Our representatives in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes (Ian

Snape and Alan Squibb) lost their third-round match against Osborne away. A mixed team
competed at Romsey in their Golf Club Reciprocal Trophy tournament and came first with Jamie
Lee also winning the individual trophy on the day. Our inter-club knockouts are on schedule
with the two pairs competitions at the semi-final stage and the singles at quarter-final round. In
the IWGU inter-league we are doing well having played nine matches and won seven of them
we sit joint top with three matches to play
We had 50 golfers along with their non-golfer partners taking part in Vice Captains Day
incorporating food and entertainment, well done Steve, Debbie and Jon!
Our Captains Day was also a great success superbly supported by members with 100 golfers
taking part, many in fancy dress, with the course setup as a greenkeepers revenge. With guests
we had a lot of people that enjoyed the golf, some food and an afternoon and evening of top
entertainment. Also huge thanks to Mike Love for producing the ‘Royal Orbs’ that formed a
‘treasure hunt’. We appreciated all the effort everyone put in, joining in, helping and supporting
us on the day. With contributions we took over £1500 from the two raffles and a further £320
from donations on the day enabling us to raise over £1300 to put towards good causes.
Lastly, I’d like to say a big thanks to Rose for her support and companionship as we both
completed ‘The Big Golf Race’ of 72 holes in a day in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. We were ably
supported and well looked after by club members all day from 5 am until early evening when we
finished – this was much appreciated. Donations have enabled us to raise over £2000 which is
nearly three times what we targeted.

- Ladies Captain Report
We seem to have had a long month of fundraising for our charities in June and the beginning of
July.
We had an amazing joint captain’s day. We raised over £1300 towards our local prostate cancer
charity. The turnout and support were fantastic and the day went exceptionally well.
Calum and I completed our 72-hole marathon in good time, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Raising
over £2000 for Prostate Cancer UK and a nearly £500 for the local prostate cancer charity.
We have had the hospice day which was another great turnout, of mixed Texas scramble teams,
raising over £500 for the local Mountbatten Hospice charity.
We have two Ryde ladies’ teams in the quarter finals of the Island ladies fourball. Which will of
course mean that we will definitely have a team in the semi-finals this year.
Sadly, we came last in the IWLGA league this year with 9 points. The winners were Shanklin and
Sandown with 22 points, followed by Freshwater with 12, Newport with 11 and the other clubs
10 points. So, we were not so far away from the others. Hopefully next year will be a better
year.

everyone on the 19th of July.

Lady Captain
- Senior’s Captain Report
Bob Tyrell provided no report, but we were given the following run down by Jon. In the senior’s
league Ryde are top but have still to play away at Ventnor and Freshwater. The next three
games are away and then finish with three at home. Ryde are in second place in the Seniors
Alliance. Inter club competitions continue to be well supported. - Greens Committee Report
7.1. To be forwarded - Midweek Stableford
8.1. We have received a letter from Sue Cox, Judi Matthews, Nicola Moreton and Abi Humber
regarding the midweek stableford competition. We discussed this in two parts: the competition
itself and then the other contents of the letter.
Part 1 – The Midweek Stableford Competition.
The golf committee voted to decide on whether we should continue to offer a midweek
competition and the most effective day and time to hold them. We agreed that we will offer a
Midweek Stableford competition on Thursdays as a Roll-Up competition. This will replace the
current Wednesday Midweek Stableford. This will be open to all members with playing rights.
Entry will be made via IntelligentGolf, and tee bookings will have to be made on BRS with all the
usual restrictions imposed by that system such as no entry before two weeks and subject to tee
closure because of matches/prior bookings etc. This competition will be managed by the Men’s
Competition Secretary and will commence from week commencing Monday 24 July.
Part 2 – The other contents of the letter.
We agreed that most of the points within the letter were not pertinent to the main issue.
Action Point: Calum to draft a response for consideration by the committee before sending to
the signatories. - New Members Meeting
9.1. A new members meeting will be held in the clubhouse on Friday 28 July at 7:30 pm after the
evening stableford competition. - AOB
10.1. JT announced that the Seniors had trialled running a 9-hole competition alongside their 18-
hole competitions but take up for this had been very low so would discontinue this.
10.2. Colin asked whether we need an EGM for decisions about the third tee. The committee
agreed that we would be better served offering an open forum and asking members for
their ideas.

10.3. JL pointed out the new IG layout for Competitions and suggested we could utilise some of
the new features.
10.4. RG asked that consideration be given to Ladies/Seniors invitational competitions and
whether it would be more pertinent to concentrate these into the exiting Hospice Day open
competition.
10.5. SH asked that we consider getting next year’s calendar organised. We advised that there
may be a better way to publish this.
10.6. DS explained that the previous engraver used for ladies has started up again – working from
– home and asked if we wanted to consider using him. Action: Colin and DS to ask each
engraver the basis on which we are charged so we can compare costs.
10.7. DS also mentioned that the blocks at the front of the patio are loose. Although people
should not move on to the tee across the plants this is happening.
- Date of next meeting
11.1. Wednesday 13 September 2023 at 18:15 in the clubhouse.
